Globalization and technological progress are continuously increasing demands on employees. In addition, the demographic trend in Western Europe will reduce the supply of new employees on a long-term basis. The statistics of Eurostats show that the population of working age (15 to 64 years) in Western Europe already reached its Peak of 331 million people in around 2010. They predict that by 2050, this population will decrease by 20 percent to 268 million people. As a result, complex work in a permanently changing environment will have to be performed by an older – concerning average age – and decreasing population.
The terms “competence” and “learning” are therefore catchwords, which are not only crucial for today’s work but also for work in the future for both employees and Enterprises.
